Verbier – Switzerland

HOTELS:

  • Nevaϊ – Chic, contemporary hotel within a renovated traditional chalet-style building and next door to well-known sister hotel, Kings. Staff are ultra friendly, welcoming and accommodating. There is a downstairs bar/all-day cafe with gorgeous fire, plus a great restaurant and upstairs lounge bar. The Spa is good, if expensive, with a sauna and hamman. The only criticism might be that since the hotel only opened in December 08, staff lack local, insider knowledge. Check in at 3pm / check out at 11am, although you can ask for an extension if quiet or the following guests are arriving late. (1936 Verbier / t: +41 27 775 4001 / nevaihotel@kingsverbier.ch / www.nevai.ch.)

RESTAURANTS:

  • Le Caveau – The best fondue & raclette in Verbier! Traditional Swiss restaurant, open all day with two evening services at 7.30pm and 9.15pm. Extremely friendly service and very popular so booking essential. (Place Centrale / t: +41 27 771 22 26.)
  • La Grange – Gastronomic restaurant in the old style with great raclette and good wine list. (1936 Verbier, Val de Bagnes, just opposite the Nevaϊ / t: +41 27 771 64 31 / lagrangeverbier@bluewin.ch / www.lagrange.ch.)
  • Le Rouge – Perfect spot to end the day skiing with a sun-trap terrace at Le Rouge/Brunnet bus stop. Inside, this newly renovated bar, restaurant and club, is a mix of old Swiss chalet style architecture with a fresh, contemporary edge. Menu is broad with good anti-pasti and ubiquitous Euro-plates. (Route de Ransou, 37 / CP – 343 / t: +41 27 771 80 00 / www.lerouge-verbier.com.)
  • Nevaϊ - Nevaϊ Hotel. Unusually excellent food with an imaginative menu for a hotel restaurant. Expect dishes such as Virgin Mary risotto (tomato risotto with a spicy celary salad), perfect steaks to order direct from the grill and goat’s cheese, polenta and Portobello mushroom stack on a bed of sundried tomato & olive tapenade. For dessert, crème brulée comes with a lime twist and chocolate fondant oozes a white chocolate liquid. Wine list is expensive and only comes by the glass if you ask specifically for the cocktail list.

SKI HIRE:

  • Ski Centre – Partner ski shop with the Hotel Nevai with 10% off all ski and snowboard hire. Excellent kit and knowledge. (Off Place Centrale / t: +41 27 771 40 10 / ski-center@verbier.ch / www.skicenterverbier.ch.)

SKI SCHOOL:

  • Adrenaline – Prices start at 205 CH / 125 Euros per hour, per person (halve the price for two people and so on). John Devoy is a young, passionate and patient instructor. Start at Les Esserts for the beginner’s slope. (Case Postale 54, CH-1936 Verbier / t: +41 79 205 9595 / +41 27 771 7459 / info@adrenaline-verbier.ch / www.adrenaline-verbier.ch.)

CLOTHING:

  • La Datcha - Sells moonboots and all the latest fashion for the slopes. (rue de la Poste / t: +41 27 771 157 / ladatcha@verbier.ch.)
