Cassis – France

BARS / CAFES / RESTAURANTS:

  • La Stazione – Fantastic Italian resto located a stone’s throw from the picture-perfect port.  The food is all made fresh to order with dishes such as langoustine linguine a speciality.  Staff can be ultra friendly or fairly aloof.  Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. (39, Victor Hugo, Cassis / t: +33 (4) 42 01 16 60.)
  • Le Pastis – Restaurant and bar within local hotel, Le Jardin d’Emile.  Brilliantly located just opposite Bestouan beach and Cap Canaille on Baie de Cassis, with a lovely terrace looking out to sea.  Buzzy, with excellent food.   (23, Avenue de l’Amiral Ganteaume, 13260, Cassis / t: +33 (4) 42 01 80 55 / www.lejardindemile.fr.)

HOTELS:

  • Maison 9 – Highly recommended: see separate write up.  Rooms from 195 Euros.  (Quartier Les Janots, 9, Avenue du Docteur Yves Bourde, 13260 Cassis / t: +33 (4) 42 08 35 86 / www.maison9.net)
  • La Suite Cassis – Cool, contemporary boutique maison d’hotes on Baie de Cassis.  Rooms from 125 Euros.  (18, Avenue de  l’amiral Ganteaume, 13260 Cassis / t: +33 (0)6 22 31 63 57 / www.lasuitecassis.com.)

LES CALANQUES:

  • Port Miou, Port Pins, En Vau – Count on at least 1hour 30 minutes to make the trek from the car park at La Presqu’ile (5 Euros) all the way to En Vau.  Leave as early as you can bear in the morning, not only to miss the heat of the day, but to see En Vau at its best, bathed in sunshine, before the shadow of the calanque covers the beach from early afternoon.  Wear good, solid trainers, a hat, sunglasses, lots of suntan lotion, and take water in a rucksack as you’ll need both hands to climb at times.  On the way back stop off at Port Pins for an afternoon dip.  It’s a long walk but worth it!
